TARDIS Driving Lessons
|
|
The Doctor, sensing animosity between his travelling companion Clara Oswald and the TARDIS, decides to teach Clara how to operate his time machine. To make it easier for her he disables the TARDIS shields to enable its 'basic mode.
However, just at that moment, the TARDIS is caught by the magnetic tractor beam of a space salvage ship, causing many of the TARDIS systems to fail. Clara then spots a strange egg-like device roll across the floor and tries to grab it but it burns her hand. Suddenly the TARDIS jolts and they are both thrown to the floor and into darkness.
Aboard the salvage ship the crew go to inspect their new salvage but they realise it is leaking fuel and so back off. Because of the danger it is decided to eject it back into space. But the crew are interrupted by The Doctor who has escaped from the TARDIS, unscathed. The Doctor learns that the salvage ship is manned by the stern Gregor Van Baalen, his brother Bram, and a human-looking android named Tricky that has enhanced sensory devices. The Doctor also realises that being an android Tricky is treated very poorly by Gregor.

Realising Clara is trapped inside the TARDIS, he convinces the brothers to help him back inside, offering them 'the salvage of a lifetime' if they help him find Clara. Gregor eventually agrees, but when the three join The Doctor inside, he assures their cooperation by locking the TARDIS doors and setting a self-destruct countdown which he states he will only disable once Clara has been rescued. As the group begin to explore the TARDIS, Gregor attemps to assess the value of the ship, though The Doctor warns him that removing key parts will make the TARDIS angry. Despite this, Gregor orders Bram to start to salvage the console, during which he is killed by a zombie like humanoid creature. Then after Gregor removes a part of the architectural reconfiguration system Gregor, Tricky, and The Doctor become trapped in a loop of corridors generated by the TARDIS as it tries to prevent the theft of its systems.
Meanwhile, Clara wakes up in the battered TARDIS with a burnt hand and goes looking for The Doctor. As she wanders through the TARDIS' corridors, she sees realises that something is following her, another zombie creature with glowing red eyes. In a panic she starts running. To shake off the creature she takes shelter in the TARDIS library. Before she is forced to flee she has a chance to read from a large book titled The History of the Time War and discovers The Doctors real name. With her hand continuing to ache from the burn, she sees that the burn marks are slowly resolving into letters. Still being chased Clara finally ends up in the console room but discovers another zombie creature, mimicking her movements, approaching her.

Meanwhile The Doctor, Gregor, and Tricky have also reached the console room but there is still no sign of Clara. The Doctor however, is able to sense Clara in an echo of the console room. With the help of Gregor's scanner to identify Clara, The Doctor creates a temporary link and grabs Clara before the zombie creature touches her. Now that Clara has been rescued Gregor demands The Doctor end the countdown. The Doctor, though reveals that the self-destruct was only a ruse to get their cooperation.
But then The Doctor discovers that the TARDIS engines have become unstable due to the leakage of time caused by the incident, and they must go to the engine room to prevent it from exploding. En route, Tricky is injured and in pain and to his surprise Gregor is forced to reveal that Tricky is truly human and also his brother. Gregor confesses that after Tricky had an accident, that wiped his memory and had his eyes replaced with bionic ones, Gregor had acted as if Tricky was an android so as to claim the captaincy of the salvage vessel. The Doctor comments on Gregor's treatment of Tricky and suggests he can do better.
Freeing Tricky, they continue their journey to the TARDIS's engine room passing through a mammoth chamber, containing The Eye of Harmony, while avoiding the zombie creatures. But they become trapped as the creatures are behind every door. When Gregor scans one of the creatures he finds that it is similar to Clara's biology. This forces The Doctor to confess that the zombie creatures are themselves from the future due to the time leak, and that they must try and prevent that future from happening. However, Gregor and Tricky are unable to avoid contacting themselves, when the creatures break in, and become zombie creatures.

The Doctor and Clara though manage to escape and they flee towards the engine room, but come across a chasm with apparently no way across. The Doctor, thinking that they are going to die, asks Clara to explain who she is and how she could have died twice before. Clara though does not understand what The Doctor is talking about and so The Doctor realises that because Clara has no knowledge of their previous encounters, she is simply a young woman. The Doctor then realises that the chasm is just an illusion and so he and Clara take a leap of faith and they reach the engine room.
There they discover that the engine has already exploded but the TARDIS has placed the room in time stasis as a safety measure. The Doctor is aware the TARDIS is trying to tell him something, but cannot figure out what until Clara looks at her hand, the burn marks fully formed into words big friendly button. The Doctor realises that they need to go back to the point of the disaster and activate the magnetic beacon - the device Clara picked up - to stop the magnetic tractor beam and prevent the disaster from occurring in the first place.
They race back to the console room, where The Doctor takes the discarded beacon and prepares to travel through a time rift that he locates in a wall. Clara asks what she will remember of the recent events. The Doctor confirms that she will remember nothing before successfully crossing the rift. Back in time, at the point where the TARDIS was attacked by the magnetic tractor beam of the salvage ship, he throws the magnetic beacon towards the past Clara. He then warns his past self that he has seen their future and they need to erase it. The past Doctor, understanding the warning, grabs the beacon from Clara and reads the words 'big friendly button' that is inscribed on its side. Understanding what it means the past Doctor hits a button on the console and the TARDIS is released from the salvage ship's grasp.
Back in the present, just before the TARDIS was caught by the magnetic tractor beam, the Van Baalens brothers, aboard the salvage ship, ignore the TARDIS and continue on their way with Gregor being much more appreciative of Tricky having it seems recalled The Doctor's words. In the TARDIS, The Doctor asks Clara if she feels safe with him, and she readily agrees.
