Synopsis

The Yeti
The Yeti
The year is 1935 The TARDIS materialises in the snowy Himalayas, and The Doctor makes a return visit to the nearby Detsen monastery. Having last been there three hundred years ago, he is astonished to find the community of monks and lamas divided by conflict. The monastery is under attack, apparently from the Yeti which are said to roam the mountainside. Furthermore, The Doctor discovers that his friend the High Lama is still alive, his ancient body under the influence of an apparently unearthly force...

Meanwhile, explorer Edward Travers is determined to track down and capture one of the Yeti. When his colleague is murdered, he refuses to blame the creatures and instead accuses The Doctor. The time travellers discover that the Yen are all too prominent in the area - in fact they are set to kill anyone who threatens the plans of the disembodied Intelligence which they serve, Whilst Jamie is keen to lend his weight to the problem, Victoria’s curiosity seems bound to lead her into danger. The Doctor and his companions soon realise that not only the monastery but the safety of the whole world is in peril.

Notes

This story introduces the Yeti – the first of two stories for the robotic creatures who are under the control of the sinister Great Intelligence.

Jack Watling, who portrayed Professor Travers, is the father of Deborah Watling, who plays companion Victoria Waterfield.

This story had the longest location shoot ever allocated to the show. Covering six consecutive days, beginning on 4th September 1967, it took place at Nant Ffrancon Pass and Ogwen Lake, Snowdonia, Gwynedd, Wales. Unfortunately, the lack of snow - compounded by several days of rain - meant that the footage recorded failed to convey the wintry setting suggested in the script.

Of particular interest is that silent, colour 8mm film of work on location exists from the making of this story.

Throughout the second half of the previous season Doctor Who had been recorded only a week ahead of transmission, a perilous situation which Producer Innes Lloyd was not keen to repeat. To prevent this from happening it was decided to record the first two episodes of this story on consecutive days - Friday 15th and Saturday 16th September 1967 – thus providing a three-week gap between production and transmission. The remaining four episodes of this story were then recoded as usual.

Like the Cybermen, in Season Four, the Yeti proved a big hit with Producer Innes Lloyd and Script Editor Peter Bryant who saw in them the potential for another popular success - especially, for the time being at least, Doctor Who had lost it’s most potent villains, the Daleks. At the time of production, Dalek creator Terry Nation was trying to create an American television show based around the Daleks, and as a result refused to grant the show permission to use the Daleks during this period. Consequently, before the fourth episode was recorded, Mervyn Haisman and Henry Lincoln were commissioned to write a Yeti sequel. This would become "The Web of Fear".

As well as returning in "The Web of Fear", the Great Intelligence, the Yeti and Professor Travers would all appear in the 1995 spin-off video "Downtime". Professor Travers is also referenced by name in the 1968 story "The Invasion" (a direct follow-up to "The Web of Fear"). "The Invasion" was intended to include Professor Travers, but due to the unavailability of actor Jack Watling, a new character, Professor Watkins, was created instead.

This story appears to be set around the mid 1930’s. In the sequel "The Web of Fear" it is revealed that the Ghanta was lost in 1630 and in "The Abominable Snowmen" it is revealed that it had been lost for ‘200 years or more’.

It is revealed that The Doctor had previously visited the Detsen monastery in Tibet, in an earlier untelevised adventure. Although a few earlier stories contain passing references to The Doctor's unseen exploits (for example, "The Celestial Toymaker"), this is the first story where The Doctor's previous unseen knowledge of the setting and its characters are crucial to the story's development.

The Yeti, in this story, are portrayed as simple but strong robots controlled by the Great Intelligence. Real Yeti, if they in fact exist, are thought to be slimmer and are very nervous of humans.

The names of a number of the Tibetan characters were appropriated by Mervyn Haisman and Henry Lincoln from real historical figures. The real Padmasambhava, for instance, lived in the eighth century and founded the Tibetan branch of Buddhism.

Unfortunately only the second episode currently exists in the BBC Archives. All six episodes were lost in the BBC's stock clearance of the 1970s and so all were reported missing from the BBC Film and Videotape Library following an audit in 1978. However, the second episode was returned by a private film collector in February 1982.

When Terrance Dicks novelised this story in 1974 he made slight changes to the names of these characters – for example Padmasambhava became Padmasambvha, Songsten became Songtsen and Thonmi became Thomni. This was done apparently on the advice of Doctor Who's then producer Barry Letts who, as a follower of Buddhism, considered that what Mervyn Haisman and Henry Lincoln had done was unnecessary and also risked causing offence.

The Target novelisation was also the first of the Second Doctor's era to be adapted (it would take another twenty years before all serials from Patrick Troughton's tenure were novelised). Interestingly when Target Books began numbering its releases in the late 1970s, it chose, for the previous releases to do so alphabetically rather than based upon publication or broadcast order. As a result, the novelisation of this story became to be identified as book number 1.

An un-abridged reading of the Target novel was also released by BBC audio on CD in February 2009. Interestingly it is read by David Troughton, the son of Patrick Troughton who played The Doctor in this story.

The Yeti
The Yeti

The TARDIS arrives in the Himalayas. But before The Doctor and his two companions, Jamie McCrimmon and Victoria Waterfield, go outside to explore their new surroundings The Doctor rummages through a chest looking for a bell. On its discovery he tells his companions that this 'ghanta' will ensure them the welcome of a lifetime.

Outside The Doctor is delighted to see the fortified walls of a monastery nearby. He also spots, on the ground, a large set of footprints. Concerned by this he decides that Jamie and Victoria are to stay in the TARDIS while he goes to the monastery alone. However, after he has gone, Jamie and Victoria decide to explore anyway. Outside they also find the footprints and decide to follow them up the mountain.

On his way down to the monastery The Doctor comes across the remains of a campsite, a lifeless body and a rucksack which he picks up. He soon arrives at the monastery which at first appears deserted. But soon after arriving the gates open and he is met by the resident monks and an explorer called Professor Travers who, on seeing the rucksack, accuses The Doctor of attacking him and murdering his companion. The Doctor protests his innocence but one of the monastery's monks, Khrisong, orders that The Doctor be taken away and locked up.

Meanwhile further up the mountain Jamie and Victoria find that the footprints lead to a small cave. While Jamie goes inside to investigate, Victoria stays outside. But when she sees a large hairy creature lumbering towards her she enters the cave so as to warn Jamie. She finds that Jamie has discovered something very odd at the back of the cave – a small pyramid made up of silver spheres. On informing Jamie about the creature outside they retrace their steps back to the cave entrance but to their horror instead of passing by the creature, on reaching the mouth of the cave, starts to enter it. Just as it is about to discover them Jamie accidentally knocks away one of the props that supports the roof and rubble crashes down on top of the creature enabling Jamie and Victoria to escape from the cave and run down the mountain, chased by the recovered creature.

Back in the monastery The Doctor confides in a young monk called Thonmi whom he tells about the ghanta that he has hidden in his cell. It is then that The Doctor is brought before Khrisong. But instead of being allowed to go free The Doctor is tied to the doors of the monastery while up on the mountainside three Yeti look down. Khrisong explains that the Yeti will decide if he is guilty or not; if he is guilty the Yeti will rescue him; if he is innocent they will attack him.

Rescue though is at hand from two places. Firstly Thonmi, who had discovered the ghanta in The Doctor’s cell, takes it to Songsten who confirms that it is the same holy bell that was entrusted to a stranger long ago and had thought to be lost to them. Songsten, on hearing the voice of Padmasambhava telling him that The Doctor is known to him and must not be harmed, instructs Thonmi to have The Doctor released.

Just as the Yeti approach The Doctor, his two companions arrive at the monastery. On the way down from the cave they had meet Travers and learnt about The Doctor’s plight. Travers though is more interested about the creature and Jamie’s discovery in the cave. In return for promising to show him the cave, Travers agrees to return to the monastery, with Jamie and Victoria, so as to clear The Doctor’s name.

With The Doctor released, and with the help of Jamie, they are able to capture one of the creatures. It is then that The Doctor discovers that it is in fact a robot which is now lifeless. The Doctor also discovers a spherical hole in the robot's chest. What they don’t at first realise is that a silver sphere, like the ones Jamie discovered in the cave, was knocked from the Yeti during its capture. Unnoticed it is inside the monastery and seems to be alive as it rolls along the floor.

The Doctor and his two travelling companions are about to discover that all is not well at the monastery. With disharmony amongst the monastery's monks and the countryside overrun by the Yeti, The Doctor realises that an extra dimensional force called the Great Intelligence is controlling the Yeti so as to scare away or kill anyone who approaches the monastery. The Doctor is also amazed to learn that Padmasambhava, who he met during a previous visit, is still alive and goes to see him. Padmasambhava tells The Doctor how he made contact with the Great Intelligence and how the alien is controlling him to further its plans to take control of the Earth.

When it is revealed that the Yeti are controlled from a secret room beneath the inner sanctum The Doctor is able to distract the Great Intelligence by using his own mental powers, so allowing Jamie and Thonmi to destroy the Great Intelligence's links with Earth. With the Great Intelligence’s hold over Padmasambhava broken the three hundred year-old master is allowed to finally die in peace.

With the Yeti no longer a threat The Doctor and his companions make their way back to the TARDIS. They are accompanied by Professor Travers. But when the explorer sees a genuine Yeti, further up the mountain, he chases after it leaving The Doctor, Jamie and Victoria to depart unnoticed in the TARDIS.
