Peri and Erimem
are in Monte Carlo in 1966. They have been sent there
by the Fifth Doctor to prevent the Veiled Leopard -
a
famous diamond which once belonged to Erimem’s
father - from being stolen. But unbeknown to them the Seventh
Doctor has sent his companions
Ace and Hex to steal the diamond.
The question
is how will the two teams cope with this contradictory
task when each is not aware the other teams presence?
As well as trying to locate
the exact location of the diamond, and then prevent it
from being stolen, Peri and Erimem decide to have some
fun at a costumed ball that has been arranged to celebrate
Lady Lillian Hawthorne’s birthday and who is going
to be presented with the diamond at the stroke of midnight.
Luckily they have invites under the names Peri and Erimem
Smith and so are able to mingle in the evocative setting
with the well-to-do and so discover the location of the
diamond.

After deducing from the
guests the most likely person who is the thief they find
themselves in the right place at the right time to prevent
it from being stolen but the thief turns out to be not
who they thought. All the same they prevent the diamond
from being stolen. Congratulating themselves on a job
well done they are not aware of a couple of guests who
have just arrived and who are introduced as Dorothy and
Thomas Smith - and who are the real thieves.
Now with four companions
of The Doctor mingling with the guests who will succeed
in their task? Will Peri's asp slip? Why does Ace have
to pretend to be a French maid? How will Erimem cope with
Pharaoh Rammalamadingdong? And can Hex really "do
posh"?
But is the Veiled Leopard
really a diamond or is it really a data storage device
containing all the history, culture and D.N.A. of a dead
alien species and why would the Seventh Doctor want it
stolen when his previous incarnation tries to do the opposite?
