The
Brigadier |
|
The Doctor and
Evelyn arrive in Cornwall and encounter a very special
old friend who is apparently helping out with a local
archaeological dig. But Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart has
another agenda which has been laid down by his old employers,
UNIT. The Doctor finds himself intrigued as to why a desolate
windswept Cornish landscape is littered with relics of
prehistoric man, why the local village is rife with the
legends of the moor being haunted by a demonic host of
imps and why this legend seems to becoming true!
While Evelyn strikes up
a friendship with the local aristocracy in the form of
Sir Archibald Flint The Doctor decides to go digging about
in an old fogou. However, something very ancient and very
evil is gathering up its power in and around Lanyon Moor
and before long The Doctor discovers that not only does
everyone in the village harbour secrets but some of those
secrets could lead to the destruction of the whole planet.
The
Doctor, with the help of the Brigadier and Evelyn, soon
realises that an ancient conflict is nearing its conclusion
and that Lanyon Moor is set to become the final battleground
as something very old, very vicious and very deadly is
stirring...

On the
Inside Cover:
This story grew out of an energetic collision of
ideas. Some of my time is spent in Cornwall where, away from the tourist
ghettos, the landscape is rugged, beautiful, and steeped in its own history and
folklore.
I was eager to place the Sixth Doctor in an environment he
had no chance to visit on television: that rural English fantasia of inns,
mansions and gothic mystery which has long been a Doctor Who staple.
When I found myself charged with the daunting task of scripting his
long-awaited meeting with the Brigadier, such a locale seemed doubly
suitable.
The result is a new tale with an unashamedly traditional
flavour. I like my Doctor Who served up with tea and crumpets, ideally
on a chilly Saturday evening just as darkness falls. We join the TARDIS as she
touches down on a windswept hillside
