Time Interference

Notes

This story can be best described as a "A Rose Historical" as it contains up to four timelines of Rose Tyler. First as a baby, then as a young child and finally there are two versions of herself with The Doctor.

The main part of this story takes place in the 1980's and features Rose's father. A young Mickey and a younger Jackie Tyler.

‘The Reapers’ - the creatures that feature in this story - are never named onscreen. Other time-feeding monsters that have appeared in Doctor Who include: The Vortisaurs (in the audio plays), the Hunters (from the novels) and Chronovores from "The Time Monster". The Chronovores also feature in the Virgin Books' The New Adventures novel "No Future", by "Father's Day" script writer Paul Cornell.

Time has been altered with varying degrees of success in previous Doctor Who adventures, but is generally considered a dangerous thing. In the 1970's, a piece of technobabble referred to as the ‘Blinovitch Limitation Effect’ was created. This established that a time traveller cannot attempt to redo a previously committed action to correct it, and that if you come into contact with a version of yourself from the past or future, a dangerous energy discharge would result.

Possible as part of the time damage caused in the story, Rose hears the track "Don't Mug Yourself" by The Streets on Pete's car stereo, decades before its release. Other music heard in this story include: "Never Gonna Give You Up", performed by Rick Astley and "Never Can Say Goodbye", performed by The Communards.

This story's reference to ‘Bad Wolf’ appears in the form of a rave poster on a wall at the scene of Pete's accident.

Like the previous stories the ending contains a trailer for the next story. In this case "The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances".

Following on immediately after this story, on BBC3, was the eighth chapter of Doctor Who Confidential "Time Trouble" looking into if The Doctor is a product of his time.

"Father's Day" was nominated for the 2006 Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form, but was beaten by Steven Moffat's two-parter "The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances".

Quote of the Story

'There used to be laws that stopped this kind of thing from happening. My people would have stopped this. But they’re gone. And now I’m going the same way.'
