"Real Time" is
the second on-line Doctor Who story at to be 'broadcast' at www.bbc.co.uk/cult
and it has been produced by Big Finish Productions for Fictionlab, producers of
the recent "Death
Comes To Time".

Sixth Doctor |
|
After the success of Big Finish Productions'
Doctor Who audio adventures it came as no surprise that they would be involved
in any future on-line audio productions. Also after the success of the first
Cybermen
story "Sword of Orion",
and the news that "Spare Parts" released
in August 2002, would be the second outing of the Cybermen, it seems fitting
that "Real Time" involves the return to the BBC of a classic Doctor Who monster
that nearly equals the popularity of the Daleks. "Real Time" has
been written and directed by Gary Russell and stars Colin Baker, as the Sixth
Doctor, and Maggie Stables as his companion
Evelyn
Smythe. It was recorded on Tuesday 19th March 2002 and is being webcast
during summer 2002 in six parts released weekly. The first episode was made
available at Midday on Friday 2nd August with the remaining five episodes
released once a week thereafter.

Maggie Stables |
|
Guest-starring in the production is Yee
Jee Tso, who previously appeared along with Paul
McGann in "Doctor
Who: The Movie", as
companion, Chang Lee. Also making an appearance
are: Christopher Scott, Jane Goddard, Richard Herring, Stewart Lee
and Nicholas Briggs.
On the planet
Chronos, The Doctor and Evelyn are summoned to help a military archaeology team
unlock the secrets of a mysterious temporal wave emanating from a
long-forgotten temple. However, at the heart of the temple there appears
to be an old foe... But is everything exactly as straightforward as it seems?
Please note that this production is available to listen too
at the Cult pages of the BBCi website. It has also been released on CD in
December 2002. Further details are contained in the News articles

Sixth Doctor |
|
Big Finish Productions have announced that they
are proud to have been commissioned by Fictionlab, producers of the recent "Death
Comes To Time" on-line Doctor Who story at
www.bbc.co.uk/cult, to create a brand
new six-part Doctor Who adventure, titled "Real Time", that is being webcast
during summer 2002.
Tuesday 19th March 2002 saw the recording of "Real Time", Big
Finish Production's first Doctor Who produced for 'broadcast' on the BBC
website. This adventure stars Colin Baker, as the Sixth Doctor, and Maggie
Stables as his companion Evelyn Smythe. It is directed by Gary Russell and
takes place between "The
Trial of a Time Lord" and "Time
and the Rani".
|
Yee Jee Tso |
|
Guest-starring in the production is Yee
Jee Tso, who previously appeared along with Paul McGann in "Doctor
Who: The Movie", as
companion, Chang Lee. Also making an appearance
are: Christopher Scott, Jane Goddard, Richard Herring, Stewart Lee
and Nicholas Briggs.
Also making
their BBC return will be the Cybermen. As announced by James Goss, Lead
Producer at Fictionlab, 'We have commissioned Big Finish to do a good,
old-fashioned monster story. We're all huge fans of the Cybermen, and it's
great to be commissioning something with them in. We loved the original
Cybermen when they were hard, nasty villains - and that's exactly what Big
Finish are offering us. Nasty, scary monsters with an evil
plan.'
The choice of which Doctor to use was a tricky one explains
Big Finish co-producer Gary Russell 'With "Death Comes to Time" featuring
Sylvester, we thought it seemed obvious to work our way backwards, and give the
Sixth Doctor a new outing. I think they saw potential there for making this a
good exciting adventure with the Cybermen, but the relationship between The Doctor and Evelyn enables us to give it a darker, harder edge. '
|
Maggie Stables |
|
As with their webcasts of "Death Comes to Time",
"Real Time" will feature animated illustrations from Lee Sullivan. And the
Cybermen won't be the only ones getting a makeover as it is understood that the
Sixth Doctor will not be wearing his multicoloured coat and he will be spending
a lot of time underground, in the shadows and getting more than a bit
grimy.
BBC Cult have told Big Finish Productions that they are
planning more online adventures in 2002, but haven't yet decided if they're
going to be Doctor Who, or something else entirely. It is understood
that a lot depends on the audience for the two Doctor Who stories that have
been commissioned so far.
|
A Cyberman |
|
Big Finish have stated that they are delighted to
be given this opportunity to make a new piece of Doctor Who history. Gary
Russell adds: 'I hope we can take this as a sign that the kind of Doctor Who
we've been responsible for creating over the last three years is both popular,
entertaining and sufficiently ground-breaking in its use of the audio medium
that we're able to take The Doctor back home to the BBC. It's a very exciting
new adventure for us, as well as the Time Lord, and we look forward to grabbing
this opportunity and giving it everything we've got.'
"Real Time" is
available to listen to in the Cult section of the BBCi website and the first
episode was made available on 2 August. As to whether "Real Time" will get a
traditional Big Finish CD release, co-producer Jason Haigh-Ellery is reported
to be very optimistic but says 'Nothing is written in stone yet. It makes
sense to wait and see how well "Real Time" goes down with the BBC Cult audience
before we look at putting out any kind of CD version.'

Official Press Release from the BBC |
|
Colin Baker |
|
Big Finish Productions have announced that BBCi
have made the following statement regarding the broadcast of "Real
Time":
Doctor Who is back in cyberspace from August 2nd with a
new voice and an old enemy! The sixth Doctor returns to the second BBCi web
drama with his colourful dress sense and ebullient nature, at
www.bbc.co.uk/cult from August 2nd 2002.
Fans that have
been clamouring for more adventures for the intrepid Time Lord can now breath a
sigh of relief as Colin Baker returns to play the part of The Doctor in the
first of six, ten-minute episodes. Each new episode is available from noon on
Friday 2nd August and every Friday thereafter.
In the second
drama series "Real Time", The Doctor is sent to Planet Chronos to find and
bring back several survey mission teams that have vanished into thin air.
Accompanied by his mature and loyal companion Dr Evelyn
Smythe (Maggie Stables) and a third survey crew (including comedians Lee and
Herring), the team are close to solving the mystery, when a member of their
gang mysteriously disappears. The Doctor realises that these disappearances are
far more serious than they thought. The Cybermen couldn't possibly be behind
these strange goings on
could they?
|
Maggie Stables |
|
Colin Baker who
plays Dr Who in the series said: "It's nice to get back to good storytelling -
it's a thumping good Cybermen story".
Richard Fell,
Head of BBC Fictionlab, said: "The previous series was a huge hit with the fans
but this time we've added a little humour and a few surprises that the fans
won't be expecting. We are positive that the Cybermen won't disappoint the Dr
Who posse". "Real Time" is the BBC's second commissioned online series,
following on from the success of "Dr Who: Death Comes to Time" - an Internet
Drama which gave the Cult site over 2.6 million page impressions in three days.
This series continues to give rise to a new form of 'webtainment', fusing audio
drama with comic-strip animation to enhance the internet viewing experience.
