Eighth Doctor |
|
In this short story the Eighth Doctor and Charley
arrive in Italy in 1982, right in the middle of Italy's World Cup celebrations,
to investigate an odd signal that is being broadcast that is well beyond the
current technology of Earth. They find the cause of the strange transmission in
a clearing, within a wood, is being created by two large aliens who The Doctor
recognises as members of the dreaded Threllip Empire. As explained by The Doctor the Threllips are a large, aggressive, expansionist race - but very
dimwitted and easily fooled. The Doctor and Charley discover that they are
working on a trans-dimensional portal which will allow a Threllips invasion
force and so the Earth is in grave danger. Rather than facing the two Threllips
directly, and so face the danger of their deadly blasters that could flatten
the wood in one go, The Doctor comes up with a plan that will take advantage of
the Threllips lack of intelligence.

Masquerading
as Time Lady Charleyostiantayshius The Doctors' companion
Charley, with the help of her seemingly dimwitted humble
transcriber otherwise known as The Doctor, play the two
Threllip off of each over. Taking advantage of the power
crazed Captain Vengorr and the frustrated and powerless
Sub-technician Thon they fool the two Threllips into believing
that they are hear to observe a very important event -
and the beginning of a Living Legend.
But will the revelation
of future events be taken in by Captain Vengorr and Sub-technician
Thon? Will The Doctor be able to convince Vengorr of his
supposedly legendary importance, that he is responsible
for the glory of the Threllips Empire and that he has
also succumbed to something called "World Cup Fever"?
Will Charley be able to convince Thon of his lack of recognition
by his Captain and that his 32 years of service will only
be remembered in a small, and rather derogatory comment
in Vengorr's memoirs?
Earth's future depends
on convincing the Threllips that The Doctor's foolishness
has jeopardised the future Threllips Empire - for which
the Threllips must return to their home planet and Transcriber
Doctor will have to scrub the TARDIS
floors for a century or two as punishment
