Audio - No Place Like Home

No Place Like Home
(Iain McLaughlin)

The now annual free gift with the January issue of Doctor Who Magazine for 2003 is a Fifth Doctor story called "No Place Like Home". Released with issue 326 this 33 minute audio story is the third play that Big Finish Production have produced in association with Doctor Who Magazine.

"No Place Like Home" has been written by Iain McLaughlin and is directed by Gary Russell. It is the first Big Finish story to feature the Peter Howell arrangement of the theme tune.

This exclusive free audio drama stars Peter Davison as the Fifth Doctor and Caroline Morris as companion Erimem. Also staring is Mark Donovan.

This short story is very reminiscent of the early William Hartnell story, "The Edge of Destruction" in that the whole of the action takes place inside the TARDIS and only has a few characters. "No Place Like Home" even goes so far as to bring a long running character from the pages of the Doctor Who Magazine back to life in the process.

Whilst showing his latest and new(ish) companion, Erimem, on a tour of her new home, The Doctor is annoyed that Erimem's cat is making itself very much at home. However, they soon discover that the TARDIS seems remarkably keen to be as unhelpful as possible. Almost as if it wants rid of its occupants…

With rooms being oddly rearranged The Doctor himself becomes confused and alarmed at how badly his guided tour is going. Especially when they keep finding themselves in the wardrobe!

Then when the power fails, and completely unaware that they are being watched, the temperature in the TARDIS drops below freezing and with a door that leads to directly to the Vortex and immediate death it soon becomes apparent that their own safety is no longer guaranteed. Thankfully The Doctor has only Erimem's immediate safety to worry about as Peri has stayed in her room and so has become stuck there.

But why is the TARDIS acting so peculiar. Has The Doctor gone to far with ignoring the safety protocols of the TARDIS and why are the Timelords so concerned? Maybe a stowaway holds the answers and Erimem's cat the solution.

Also include with this free CD is a promotion preview version of the first episode of " Dalek War" - the beginning of the second instalment of The Doctor less "Dalek Empire" series also from Big Finish Productions.
