"Project: Twilight"
is very much about vampires but it bears very little resemblance
to either the story of "Dracula" or the more recent hit
television series "Buffy the Vampire Slayer". It is a
gritty tale with some very desperate vampires in a modern-day
London and contains lots of gore, gambling and garlic
galore.
The
TARDIS
lands on the bank of the river Thames in a contemporary
London so that the Sixth Doctor can satisfy his hunger
for a particular delicacy that he wants to share with
Evelyn. As he states to her 'I've been to the finest restaurants
in the Galaxy - but you can't beat crispy duck from the
Slow Boat'. But unbeknown to them both they are about
to stumble into a blood feud, the roots of which stretch
back almost a century.
It is not long
before The Doctor and his assistant come across something
in the street that makes them both lose their appetites.
They are horrified to discover a spate of animal carcasses
which seem to have been eaten. As The Doctor and Evelyn
are confronted with further deaths in a London alleyway
it is not long before their investigation leads them to
some strange goings on at a nearby casino called "The
Dusk". The Doctor has just found out that the streets
of South London are being paved in blood for an inhuman
killer stalks the local avenues and alleyways. A killer
with a taste for human flesh!
Meanwhile, the doors of
"The Dusk" are open for business. Bets are called, cards
are dealt and roulette wheels are being spun as fortunes
are won and lost. But one thing is for sure - The Dusk
is no ordinary casino. Something Cassie, The Dusk's new
barmaid, is about to find out. Because the vicious Reggie
Head and his business partner, Amelia, run this unique
casino. And both of them have rather a dark and unpleasant
past.
When
The Doctor tries to help a wounded man that he and Evelyn
find outside The Dusk they realise that they have happened
upon some rather nasty goings-on which are occurring within
the casino. Is there more to casino owner Reggie "The
Gent" Mead or is he just a common gangster and what secrets
are hidden in the bowels of the Dusk because deep within
the cellars of the casino strange experiments are being
conducted.

As Evelyn becomes maternal towards Cassie, who she
discovers is being threatened by Reggie in a very gruesome way, The Doctor
finds himself forming an uneasy alliance where the line between friend and
enemy is blurred. The Doctor is about to discover that he is dealing with an
enemy Gallifrey tried to destroy centuries ago. When The Doctor meets Nimrod he
suddenly realises the truth - that he is dealing with vampires. He also
realises that the stakes may be too high... And what
connection does the apparently sleazy Bermondsey casino have to a long- buried
government initiative known as "Project: Twilight"? The Doctor realises that
the brutality of war often encourages horrific inventions. But what happens
when the horrors of war won't die away afterwards? What happens when they're
simply undead? But what if the wounded man they tried to help ceased to be a
man long ago? What if someone The Doctor throws himself into helping is no
friend of humanity? What if a vampire can detect The Doctor's metabolism, but
he remains blind to theirs? And above all, what was the project created so long
ago at the shadowy facility known as The Forge?

Has The Doctor made a fatal mistake in agreeing to
help Reggie and Amelia, whose past begins to catch up with them. With the
horrific reality behind The Doctor's facade revealed, can The Doctor overcome
his prejudices? As The Doctor states 'Helping those creatures goes against
every fibre of my being! We were fool enough to unleash their evil into the
Universe'. As a blood soaked dawn for humanity approaches, The Doctor is
forced to turn to Nimrod for help. But is it too late to destroy "Project:
Twilight" and save those he cares for including Evelyn? And if he does can he
be certain that Nimrod won't still have the upper hand? |

On the Inside
Cover: Las Vegas! Bright Lights! Gambling! A city that never sleeps!
An ideal backdrop for The Doctor and Evelyn to take on a hoard of slavering
modern day Nosferatu. "That's great," said Gary Russell one afternoon,
"But can we set it in Bermondsey?" And that's how Blood Money became Project:
Twilight. We'll clear a few things up from the start - Omega does not
appear in Project: Twilight. Neither does Rassilon. Come to that, nor does it
feature the death of Evelyn Smythe, but these and countless other rumours about
the story on various 'net discussion groups provided no end of amusement as the
script took shape. Writing is fun. Writing Doctor Who doubles that fun, and when
you're writing in a partnership, it means that there's someone to share the fun
with. It didn't help that one of us decided to up sticks and swap the
picturesque climes of Bath for London just as we started scribbling, but thanks
to fevered e-mail threads zipping up and down the M4 and three hour phone
calls, we managed to pull together what you're about to hear. The challenge
with taking on vampires in Doctor Who was to do something that gave the blood
suckers a new spin, without getting bogged down in continuity and
cliché. We hope we've achieved that. And Gallifrey is only mentioned
once, so there!
