John Nathan Turner Passes Away |
It
is with great sadness that it was announced that former Doctor
Who producer John
Nathan-Turner passed away in May
following a short illness.
He
will always be remembered by Doctor Who fans as being the
show's longest-serving producer. His work on the programme spanned
two decades and
started as floor assistant on "The
Space Pirates" in 1969. Then in 1977 he
became Production Unit Manager, starting with "The
Invisible Enemy".
Three years later, John succeeded Graham Williams as the
series' full-time producer; he was, at 33, the youngest staff producer working
at the BBC. His first story as producer was "The
Leisure Hive" and he remained
in this post until the series ended with "Survival" in 1989.
Even
though Doctor Who ended in 1989 John main-tained an active
row becoming involved with BBC Video, overseeing a number of special
releases such as "Shada", "The
Invasion" and the Year Tapes.
On
a personal note I had the pleasure to meet him on a couple of times
while at the Longleat
Doctor Who Signing events where
he would become auctioneer for the day. Despite being so busy he
would always stop to sign autographs and to have his photo
taken.
He will be greatly missed by all Doctor Who Fans and
the show has lost one of its staunchest allies.
It
is understood that the Doctor Who Magazine are planning a special full
tribute in Issue 319 that is due out on the 27th July. |
