Solo Sarah Jane Smith on Audio
Updated 25 June 2002

The ever-popular 1975 companion and everyone's favourite intrepid investigative journalist Sarah Jane Smith, played by Elisabeth Sladen, returns for a thrilling series of solo adventures.

These five brand-new doctorless audio adventures for release starting monthly from July 2002 will take Sarah into the darker realms of international espionage and the world of the paranormal... Big Finish Productions, are intending to create something completely different then that tried with the 1981's Sarah Jane-starring television pilot "K9 and Company". Big Finish executive producer Jason Haigh-Ellery explains:

"Right from Day One, we've had numerous requests to bring Sarah - but we wanted to use her in her own right, rather than just put her in one Doctor Who story opposite an unfamiliar Doctor. We're all fans of both the character and of Elisabeth Sladen, and it's going to be a lot of fun satisfying people's demands to revisit Sarah."

Big Finish are going to develop a background intended to focus much more on Sarah as a human being who, having seen the universe, is trying to come to terms with being confined to just one planet in one time zone.

One thing which is clear is there will be no K9 and no access to friends in high places, like those she had in UNIT, that can be called upon for help. And she'll need help, because in the course of her work she'll have uncovered some unpleasant truths about today's world - and someone out there wants her kept quiet.

Big Finish intend for this series to be slightly more earthy, more gritty and character-led than you might expect and they want to focus on Sarah using her wits and her strengths rather than science or technology to get her out of trouble. Of course, those getting her into trouble in the first place may have no end of technological resources at their command.

The five plays were recorded early in 2002 for a staggered release later in the year. Terrance Dicks has written the first story and Barry Letts has done the second. David Bishop, Rupert Laight and Peter Anghelides have written the subsequent stories.

So far no precise details have been released yet except that the official title of the series will simply be: "Sarah Jane Smith" and that the plays will be released one a month beginning in July 2002.

Big Finish Productions had previously announced that they had included the character of Samantha Jones, former companion to the Eighth Doctor in BBC Publishing's run of novels, in the first three stories. However, they have decided to drop this character as having another ex-companion of The Doctor's brought into play too many questions about Sarah and Sam. Juliet Warner, the actress due to play Sam, has been given a new character, called Ellie Martin, who is someone more specific to the Sarah Jane Smith series and who wouldn't carry so much "baggage".
