The Gungslinger
The Gungslinger
An alien humanoid is chased by a cybernetic being known as The Gungslinger. But despite pleading with the cyborg killer the alien humanoid then attempts to attack The Gungslinger only to be fatally shot.

When The Doctor, Amy and Rory arrive in a town called Mercy, in the American Old West, they discover it is under siege. The Gunslinger is watching - and The Doctor is next on his hit list.

The Doctor finds himself not just in the crossfire of an ancient conflict between the cyborg killer and another alien fugitive, but he is also faced with a moral dilemma: which side should he take? Who really is the real villain?

Notes

This story, and the previous story, "Dinosaurs on a Spaceship", were the first stories to be produced for Season Thirty Three (New Series 7), and both have been directed by Saul Metzstein. They are Saul Metzstein's first Doctor Who credits.

This story was recorded on location in Almería in Spain, where film studios have built Wild West-style streets that have been used in the making of over 100 Western-set films including A Fistful of Dollars.

Executive Producer and head writer Steven Moffat has stated that filming in Spain was cheaper than constructing a set in the UK and that ‘We knew from the start we need some serious location shooting for this one, and given the most iconic American setting imaginable, there was only one place to go - Spain’. Filming took place, between the 8th and 17th March 2012, at Oasys/Mini Hollywood and Fort Bravo/Texas Hollywood.

The Doctor Who production team previously travelled to Spain in 1984 for the filming of the 1985 Sixth Doctor story "The Two Doctors".

Writer Toby Whithouse developed this story from a one-line pitch from Steven Moffat. He has revealed that he felt obliged to include common Western elements including The Doctor riding a horse and a face-off at high noon. The hardest scene to write was where The Doctor is forced to use a gun; The Doctor is a pacifist and he would need ‘the right sort of emotional journey’. Toby Whithouse also wanted the cyborg villain to be three-dimensional and sympathetic, which would require it to have a ‘living consciousness’ rather than a ‘soulless automaton’.

Toby Whithouse previously wrote the 2006 Tenth Doctor story "School Reunion" and for the Eleventh Doctor stories "The Vampires of Venice" (2010) and "The God Complex" (2011).

The Wild West has not been a setting for a Doctor Who story since the 1966 First Doctor story "The Gunfighters". Toby Whithouse was advised not to watch "The Gunfighters" as it is ‘not exactly the jewel in the crown’.

Along with "The Gunfighters" this story is one of a number of Westerns that The Doctor has been in. Matt Smith can be heard reading the 2010 Eleventh Doctor audio story, "The Runaway Train". That story even featured Amy, though not played by Karen Gillan, so "A Town Called Mercy" is Amy's second trip to this era.

The guest cast features Adrian Scarborough as Kahler-Jex. Adrian Scarborough stars in the BBC One Upstairs Downstairs as Mr Pritchard, and has also appeared as Pete in Gavin & Stacey, and as Mr Johnson in Cranford. Adrian Scarborough also previously played the part of Rupert Van Thal in the Big Finish Productions Fifth Doctor audio story "The Boy That Time Forgot".

Also among the guest cast are Ben Browder and Mexican actor Rob Cavezos. Following his four-year stint as the lead in Farscape, playing the lost astronaut John Crichton, Ben Browder took on the regular role of Cameron Mitchell in Stargate and has had guest roles in CSI Miami and Chuck. While Rob Cavezos has recently completed filming on the Ron Howard-directed movie Rush.

Matt Smith has been reported as praising guest actors Ben Browder, who he said made ‘a good cowboy’ with ‘that great drawl’, and Adrian Scarborough, who he has said ‘steals the whole episode’. Ben Browder was offered the role and gladly accepted as he was aware of the show and he also wanted to do a western.

Also starring in this story are PhoneShop's Andrew Brooke, and Star Wars actor Garrick Hagon. Garrick Hagon has previous been in Doctor Who, having played the part of Ky in the 1972 Third Doctor story "The Mutants". He also had a guest role in Big Finish Productions Fifth Doctor audio story "The Axis of Insanity".

The Doctor attempts to take Amy and Rory to Mexico to see the Day of the Dead festival.

In the previous story, "Dinosaurs on a Spaceship", The Doctor is heard stating that he has a Christmas list. He again makes reference to one here, asking if anyone has been peeking at it.

Once again The Doctor dons a Stetson, wearing one in "The Impossible Astronaut" and then once again in "Closing Time" and subsequently in "The Wedding of River Song".

The Doctor mentions both The Master and the Daleks when telling Amy why he is willing to let The Gunslinger take revenge on Kahler-Jex. The Doctor tells Amy that the deaths of The Master and The Daleks were because of his mercy. The Daleks most recent appearance was in "Asylum of the Daleks", and The Master's most recent appearance was in the 2009/10 Tenth Doctor story "The End of Time".

The Doctor is seen riding a horse named ‘Susan’. He also is heard to say that he ‘speaks horse’, similar to his being able to communicate with cats and babies. (see the Tenth Doctor story 2010 "The Lodger" and the Eleventh Doctor stories "A Good Man Goes to War" and "Closing Time").

The Doctor claims to be 1200 years old. If this is true then 97 years have passed for him since the events of "The Impossible Astronaut/The Wedding of River Song".

Kahler-Jex is heard to say that he can tell that Amy is a mother.

The security system on Kahler-Jex's spaceship was made by the Atraxi.

The Gunslinger has some similarity to the Clades (see the BBC Books Tenth Doctor novel "Peacemaker").

This story contains a number of errors. Namely: The Marshal’s badge shown prominently throughout the episode uses the British spelling of the word ‘Marshal’ whereas the badge should use the American spelling ‘Marshall’ as this story is set in the United States of America; when The Doctor first puts on the Marshal badge, he puts it on his lapel. Later on it changes between that and his breastpocket; this story is set in 1870 and a Colt Single Action Army can be seen aimed at The Doctor at the beginning of the story – however, this revolver was not invented until 1872.

This story is notable for being the first story produced by BBC Wales whose visual effects were not credited to The Mill. Although various stories had, in the past, required help from other companies, The Mill had always managed to retain the main ‘Visual Effects’ credit. The most notable recent example of this was "The Doctor, The Widow and the Wardrobe", where some of the effects were done by Space Digital. There, Space Digital received an ‘Additional Visual Effects’ credit. For this story though Space Digital become the first company, other than The Mill, to get the main ‘Visual Effects’ credit since the 2005 Ninth Doctor story "Rose".

As with the previous two stories ("Asylum of the Daleks" and "Dinosaurs on a Spaceship") this story includes a unique logo in the title sequence. This time with a wooden boarding, complete with bullet holes. The production team have confirmed that the title sequence for every story in this season will have slightly different stylized versions of the Doctor Who logo.

A preview clip of this story was released at the 2012 San Diego Comic-Con International.

The Plot

A Town Called Mercy

The Wild West
The Wild West

An alien humanoid is chased down by a cybernetic being, with a very large gun instead of an arm. The alien tries to plead with and then attack the cyborg only to be fatally shot. Just before the alien dies he asks if he is the last but the cyborg replies that there is one more: "The Doctor".

The Doctor, Amy, and Rory, while en-route to the Day of the Dead celebration in Mexico, arrive at the small American Frontier town of Mercy. When they explore the town The Doctor becomes curious as to why there is a ring of stone and wood surrounding the town. He is even more curious about the availability of electricity to the town – which is about ten years too early.

When they enter the Saloon, and The Doctor introduces himself, the locals become angry, especially after getting him to admit he is an alien. The locals grab The Doctor and his travelling companions and drag them out of town, throwing The Doctor over the circle. The cyborg then approaches the defenceless Doctor. He is saved by Isaac, the town's Marshal, who points out that The Doctor is not the same doctor that the stranger wants.

They learn from Isaac that they have been kept within the town for the last three weeks by "The Gunslinger", who uses alien weaponry to kill anyone trying to leave the town and has also been blocking the town from receiving any supplies and at this rate the people will starve to death unless something can be done. They also learn that The Gunslinger has demanded the town turn over "The Doctor", which The Doctor deduces is the alien being that is hiding in the Marshal's jail.

The alien introduces himself as Kahler-Jex, who had crashed on Earth about ten years earlier, and was rescued from his craft by the occupants of Mercy. In return, Kahler-Jex has helped the town as their physician including ending a deadly cholera outbreak and providing the town with primitive electricity. However, the town's food supplies are nearly depleted, and despite the situation becoming direr with each passing day, the Marshal is reluctant to hand over Kahler-Jex to The Gunslinger. The Doctor though wants to know what Kahler-Jex may have done to give rise to The Gunslinger's wrath but Isaac defends him saying Mercy is a place of second chances and the townsfolk have taken him in.

Not Such a Warm Welcome
Not Such a Warm Welcome

The Doctor offers to use his TARDIS to get Kahler-Jex off-world, riding off on horseback to collect his time machine while Rory and Isaac (who is dressed in Kahler-Jex's jacket and hat) attempt to distract The Gunslinger. However, instead of going to his TARDIS The Doctor comes across Kahler-Jex's spaceship, surprisingly undamaged. He enters the craft, though setting off an alarm heard across the plains, and reviews Kahler-Jex’s records, discovering the truth about Kahler-Jex – that he was part of a team of scientists from his war-torn homeworld that experimented on a number of volunteers to convert them into cyborgs, who either died or killed countless people in the battle.

Aghast, The Doctor leaves the spaceship only to find The Gunslinger waiting for him. The Doctor realises that The Gunslinger is one of Kahler-Jex's subjects who is looking for revenge. The Gunslinger explains that its programming prevents it from harming innocents – hence the ring of wood and rocks that protects the townsfolk. The Gunslinger then gives The Doctor an ultimatum: send Kahler-Jex out or the next person who tries to leave town will be killed.

The Doctor then returns to Mercy and angrily reveals to Amy, Rory and Isaac the extent of the alien's crime. Kahler-Jex though defends his actions; his planet was being decimated by a war and the scientists were ordered to create a weapon to end it. They did and the cyborgs defeated the enemy in a week before being dismantled. However, The Gunslinger was damaged in the field, destroying part of its programming and leading to the re-emergence of its original personality. Horrified and enraged by what was done to him, he escaped and has been hunting down the team that turned him into a monster and Kahler-Jex is the last on his list.

The Gungslinger
The Gungslinger

Even more enraged The Doctor drags the apologetic Kahler-Jex to the edge of town, followed by his companions and the concerned townsfolk. As soon as he forces Kahler-Jex to cross the line The Gunslinger arrives, and prepares to shot as Kahler-Jex pleads that he has changed his ways and now rejects his past actions, but this does not sway the cyborg. As the Gunslinger is about to fire, Isaac pushes Kahler-Jex out of the way, taking the lethal shot. Isaac's final action is to hand his Marshal badge to The Doctor and ask him to protect the town. The Gunslinger leaves, warning that he will return tomorrow at high noon to collect Kahler-Jex, even if it puts all the townspeople at risk.

The following day, at midday, The Gunslinger arrives and The Doctor distracts the cyborg by using his sonic screwdriver to amplify the electricity through town, while some of the other townsfolk, wearing makeup applied in the same fashion as Kahler-Jex's facial markings, dash between buildings to confuse the cyborg. This enables Kahler-Jex to flee out of town to his spaceship just as The Doctor had planned. The Doctor’s plan nearly works until the cyborg sees one of the men clearly and realises he has been tricked. But Kahler-Jex has had enough time to reach his spaceship but is torn with concern for the people who helped him. So instead of taking off, Kahler-Jex initiates the spaceship's self-destruct, thanking The Doctor and town before he is destroyed.

With the death of Kahler-Jex The Gunslinger becomes desolate, now that his quest for revenge is complete, and refuses The Doctor's offer to return him home; he is a weapon without a purpose and so will walk out into the desert far away from the town and self-destruct. The Doctor though offers The Gunslinger an alternative.

And so as Mercy recovers from the previous weeks, and The Doctor and his travelling companions say goodbye, The Gunslinger remains on the outskirts of the town as its protector, with Isaac's Marshal badge pinned to the cyborg’s clothes.

Quote of the Story

'Looking at you, Doctor, is like looking into a mirror. Almost. There's rage there, like me. Guilt, like me. Solitude. Everything but the nerve to do what needs is be done. Thank the Gods my people weren't relying on you to save them…'
