"The Robot Revolution" is the first story of the main part of Season Forty Two (New Series 15). It was written by showrunner Russell T Davies and was directed by Peter Hoar.
This story stars Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor and introduces Varada Sethu who became his new travelling companion, Belinda Chandra. This marks Varada Sethu’s first appearance as a regular cast member following her first appearance as Mundy Flynn in the previous season’s "Boom".
In this story giant red robots abduct a nurse named Belinda Chandra and take her to an alien planet with The Doctor in hot pursuit. There they inadvertently become involved in a war that has devastated what was once a tranquil planet. It has been revealed that Russell T Davies initially conceptualised the idea for this story as a one-off story and later reworked it to serve as a companion introduction.
This story begins one of the main plotlines of this season; that of The Doctor being unable to use the TARDIS to return Belinda back home, with the end of this story revealing that a cataclysmic event occurred on the 24th May 2025 that caused the complete destruction of Earth itself.
After making small appearances in the previous season, and similar to the multiple appearances of Susan Twist during the previous season, this story also begins the second plotline of this season: that of Mrs Flood now making random appearances in the following stories and so continuing to explore the cryptic and enigmatic nature of this character.
Mrs Flood is played by Anita Dobson who is best known for playing the part of landlady Angie Watts in the BBC soap opera EastEnders from that show's inception in 1985 until 1988. Mrs Flood was first introduced in the 2023 Christmas special "The Church on Ruby Road" and appeared in a further two stories ("73 Yards" and "The Legend of Ruby Sunday/Empire of Death") during Season Forty One (New Series 14). Mrs Flood's true identity and true nature is eventually revealed at the end of this season’s story, "The Interstellar Song Contest".
Alan Budd, this story’s antagonist, is portrayed by Jonny Green who has formerly voiced characters in various Doctor Who and Torchwood audio dramas.
Two of the robots were operated by Stephen Love and Robert Strange; both of whom were Wrath Warriors in the 2023 Fourteenth Doctor story "The Star Beast", while Robert Strange was also the Bogeyman in the 2024 story "Space Babies".
Playing the part of Manny was Bolton-born Max Parker who is best-known for his role in the fantasy series Vampire Academy. Russell T Davies revealed that ‘It's amazing to get an actor of Max's calibre on board to launch the new season - he's so busy, we were lucky to get him! He's had a lead role on Netflix, as Henry VIII in Blood, Sex & Royalty, and will soon be seen in Netflix's The Corps, directed by none other than The Robot Revolution's Peter Hoar. Max is a wonderful talent, and a huge presence within the Manchester acting community. And believe me, he hits the ground running in Doctor Who, we can't wait for you to see him in action’.
Also joining the cast are: Belinda Owusu, Evelyn Miller, Jeff Kunjumon and Caleb Hughes.
Russell T Davies has revealed that this story was difficult to write because he had struggled with turning a joke about naming a star after someone into a full script, and that he also viewed this story as a wider narrative about the concerns surrounding artificial intelligence in a real-world context.
Pre-production for the story began in October 2023, with many design aspects based around retrofuturism. Filming then occurred in November and December 2023 at Wolf Studios Wales and in Roath, Cardiff. Post-production continued for some months later. It was recorded in the second filming block for this season along with "Lucky Day".
Production Designer Phil Sims has revealed that along with Russell T Davies they took inspiration from Forbidden Planet and This Island Earth when conceiving the sets. They were created with a retro-futuristic appearance influenced by the 1950s.
Millennium FX designed the robot costumes over the course of eight weeks. They were first created digitally and split into 34 different pieces to be printed in 3D. Afterwards, the pieces were assembled and finished with silicon and fiberglass.
The polishing robot was dubbed Scoot by the production team. It was constructed with a similar 1950s aesthetics, primarily based on cars and home appliances of the time period. Michael van Kesteren, this story’s prop designer, specifically named the Chevrolet Bel Air and Fiat 500 as examples of vehicles that were used. The robot was also based on several different characters, such as WALL-E, Johnny 5 and some of the robots seen in Star Wars.
Scoot was given unique omni-wheels that allowed it to move laterally as well as straight ahead. This was because the designers wanted the robot to have a unique range of motion compared to other robots of similar size. Scoot was also granted a moveable eye and small puppeteered arms in order to convey more emotion. Due to the prop's interior mechanics, two versions of this robot were produced: one that could pass freely around the set and another for the actors to interact with.
The AI Generator was designed to appear large and imposing, with the set and art design teams collaborating to determine where Alan would be inside the machine.
The set for the throne room, where Belinda is initially brought to in this story, was re-used for the set that had contained the AI Generator's room. The design team placed the ‘head’ of the AI Generator's design just below the centrepiece of the room in order to create the illusion that the room acted like a crown for the AI Generator and that the room was an extension of him.
This story’s original opening moments would have featured Belinda's family, but Russell T Davies decided to cut this scene as he felt that ‘a story about Belinda having a star named after her should start with Belinda having the star named after her’.
The scene that introduces Belinda's roommates was not included in the original script but added to a rewritten version months after the initial production block had concluded. Russell T Davies ultimately decided to add them because he felt it unrealistic for a young working nurse to be able to afford a large house by herself. This scene was recorded while a later story was in production. A hallway with a doorway was constructed for these, with Russell T Davies saying he ‘had to be careful and kind to the budget’.
The rebel base has a medical bay stocked with X-ray blankets. When worn, these reveal a person's innards and provide helpful information, such as the patient’s name. The Doctor though is named ‘Unknown’.
The Doctor is heard using his ‘wibbly wobbly, timey wimey’ catchphrase again. The Tenth Doctor first used it in the 2007 story "Blink".
The Doctor is reminded of Mundy Flynn when Belinda Chandra, complains about potentially missing her Monday shift. It is actually revealed that Belinda is an ancestor of Mundy Flynn who he met in "Boom". As both parts are played by Varada Sethu the resemblance between both characters is acknowledged by The Doctor.
There was a myth that the Daleks would return in this story. This though did not occur. This rumour arose from scenes in the trailer for this story depicting spaceships, resembling Dalek spaceships, and a character being vapourised that resembled a Dalek extermination.
The Cloister Bell is heard at the end of this story when The Doctor struggles to pilot the TARDIS back to Earth in order to return Belinda home. The TARDIS ‘groan’ also returns (see "The Legend of Ruby Sunday/Empire of Death").
It is revealed that the planets Missbelindachandra and Missbelindachandra One are both located in the Orion constellation.
Missbelindachandra One was peaceful until ten years ago, when the robots brought Alan Budd from Earth to be their leader. Inspired by his beloved video games, he exploited his authority to the fullest, turning the formerly friendly robots into the vanguard of a totalitarian regime. Now, he sits, roboticised, inside the Al Generator, eliminating all threats to his rule and awaiting the arrival of Belinda, his queen.
The Doctor references singer Kylie Minogue again using her 2023 hit song Padam Padam. Kylie Minogue appeared in the show in the 2007 Christmas Special "Voyage of the Damned".
Belinda's star certificate is dated the 5th April 2008, which was the broadcast date for the Tenth Doctor story "Partners in Crime".
This story was made available on Saturday 12th April 2025 via the BBC iPlayer at 8am in the morning and simultaneously on Disney+ in other countries across the world. An advanced press screening for this story occurred on the 31st March 2025.
Overnight viewing figures estimated that this story was watched by 2 million people on its BBC One broadcast, making it the second most-watched programme of the night on BBC One behind the finale of the second series of Gladiators, as well as the fourth most-watched programme of the day. Within a week after its broadcast, this story had been viewed by 3.6 million and was the twenty-first most-watched show of the week.
Reception was mixed, although Varada Sethu's characterisation as Belinda Chandra was particularly praised.
A novelisation of this story, written by Una McCormack, along with an audio version, read by Varada Sethu, were released in July 2025 as part of the Target Collection.
