Notes

This story was written by Matthew Graham, co-creator of Life on Mars, Ashes to Ashes and Bonekickers.

Originally this slot was to be filled by a story by actor/writer Stephen Fry, Matthew Graham stepped in and wrote this story at short notice.

Nina Sosanya (who plays Trish) starred alongside David Tennant in the 2005 BBC production of Casanova, produced by Russell T Davies.

Edna Doré (who plays Maeve) is probably best known for playing Frank Butcher's mother Mo in EastEnders.

Huw Edwards joined a long list of BBC newsreaders to feature in the show, playing himself commentating on the Olympic Opening Ceremony.

Prior to the graphite scribble monster, The Doctor encountered other mineral-based lifeforms, such as the crystalline Krotons in the 1968 story "The Krotons", the Kastrians in the 1976 story "The Hand of Fear" and the Ogri in the 1978 story "The Stones of Blood".

The addition of the 2012 London Olympics was added when the opportunity arose due to London's successful bid.

"The Kookaburra Song", featured in this story, was written by Marion Sinclair in 1932 for a contest being held by the Victorian Guides.

The 54 second TARDISode for this story was in a Crimewatch-style report (called CrimeCrackers) on the children's disappearances -- but done in a more sensationalistic, American style, to connote the story's 2012 setting. This was filmed on the 31st January 2006 at Page Drive, Cardif. As with all the other TARDISode's - all of which were written by Gareth Roberts - it could be downloaded from the BBC Doctor Who website or via a mobile phone a week before the broadcast of the main story.

The ending of this story contains a trailer for the first episode of the next story - "Army of Ghosts/Doomsday".

Following on immediately after this story, on BBC3, was the eleventh chapter of the second series of Doctor Who Confidential, "The Fright Stuff" presented by Mark Gatiss.

First and Last

The Firsts:

The first appearance of reporter/newsreader Huw Edwards - joining a long list of BBC newsreaders and real-life actors to feature in the show as themselves.

The first Doctor Who story to be written by Matthew Graham.
