(Alan Barnes)

Big Finish Productions have announced that the Fifth Doctor, Peter Davison, is to battle the Sontarans in an exciting new Doctor Who audio adventure due in 2011!

The squat clone soldiers are to make their shocking comeback for the first time in a Big Finish audio release. ‘Alan Barnes has written a storming story for them", Nicholas Briggs has revealed. ‘These are definitely the Sontarans of old dressed in their black armour, and from the same brood hatching as Commander Linx’ (as seen in the 1973 Third Doctor story "The Time Warrior").

In over 140 monthly Doctor Who plays Big Finish Productions have never featured the Sontarans. Nicholas Briggs has revealed that 'Alan Barnes has written a storming story for them, and Steven Moffat was kind enough to give his blessing for us to use them'.

'Of course, casting the Sontarans is going to be an interesting challenge - they’re a monster with a very specific voice quality, and I’m very keen we get actors who can capture the stark military mindset'.
The Sontarans

The Sontarans have featured in a number of television stories. As well as "The Time Warrior" they have also appeared in "The Sontaran Experiment", "The Invasion of Time", "The Two Doctors" and "The Sontaran Stratagem/The Poison Sky". They have also appeared in The Sarah Jane Adventures spin-off series starring Elisabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane Smith.

"Heroes of Sontar", written by Alan Barnes, will be released in April 2011.
