Doctor Who on Blue Peter

The BBC children's programme Blue Peter, that was broadcast on BBC 1 on the 7th April 1999, included an extensive item celebrating the continuing success of Doctor Who in an attempt to introduce the programme to a younger audience. It featured a lengthy look at Doctor Who using numerous clips from the series and the Doctor Who theme music instead of the usual Blue Peter arrangement.

Th
e show's three presenters, Katy Hill, Konnie Huq and Stewart Miles, emerged from the TARDIS at the beginning of the show dressed as Tom Baker, Jon Pertwee and Peter Davison. The show also included a number of the series scariest opponents who were paraded, catwalk-style, into the studio. They included a Cyberman from "Silver Nemesis", a Voc Robot from "The Robots of Death", a Zygon, a Draconian and three Daleks. Other monsters present in the studio included a Sontaran, a Haemovore and a Vervoid. The Daleks were the only creatures with a speaking role even though the Cyberman did try to strangle presenter Stewart Miles. A static K9 was also present in the studio and presenter Katy Hill even had sole use of the Sonic Screwdriver.

A number of young fans were also interviewed about what attracted them to the show, and they were shown browsing some of The Doctor Who web sites including the Official BBC Doctor Who Web Site.

Louise Jameson on Blue Peter

Actress Louise Jameson who played former assistant Leela, but who is now more familiar to viewers as Rosa in EastEnders, also joined the team in the studio. During her brief interview she confirmed that since Doctor Who has not been on terrestrial television, since it went off he air in 1989, a whole generation has grown up without regular exposure to the programme. She agreed that the show's continued popularity is due to parents, who grew up while the show was on the air, introducing it to their children.

The clips shown covered all of the first seven incarnations of The Doctor. Included was the famous first regeneration scene from "The Tenth Planet", Davros being exterminated by the Daleks, from "Genesis of the Daleks", the TARDIS being rocked in space in "Pyramids of Mars" and Leela's withering put-down of Mandrel, from "The Sun Makers".

The show ended with all three presenters, Louise Jameson and the four young guests entering the TARDIS which then dematerialised. This just left the monsters to take over the studio and for the Daleks to announce what will be on the next show.
