New Doctor Who adventures on audio
It has been announced that BBC Worldwide has awarded Big Finish Productions, the independent production company behind the audio stories of Bernice Summerfield's New Adventure novels, a licence to produce official, new Doctor Who audio dramas.

It is planned that these stories will be recorded as fully dramatised radio plays and will feature a mixture of previous Doctors and companions. Peter Davison, Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy have already agread to recreate their roles, and the producers also hope to work with both Tom Baker and Paul McGann. Each Doctor will, where possible, be teamed with their particular assistants played by the original actors.

The first story, "The Sirens of Time", has been written by Nick Briggs and features Peter Davison, Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy as the Fifth, Sixth, and Seventh Doctors. It is planned that this story, which has been described as "a multi-Doctor story with a twist", will be recorded in the Spring for a possible release in June 1999. Exact story details are unknown except that Peter Davison will be in episode 1, Colin Baker in episode 2, Sylvester McCoy in episode 3, and all three performers in the final episode of this 4 part adventure.

Each adventure will be in the same format as a TV story, with four twenty-five minute episodes. It is planned that each story will be released every other month on two cassettes. It will also be released on a double CD which will only be available exclusively through mail-order.

This new venture will be overseen by BBC books editor Stephen Cole, who has been named Executive Producer for the BBC. It is understood that he is keen that the new stories tie in closely to the continuity established by the television series and that they will be considered official Doctor Who canon by the BBC. They will produced by Jason Haigh-Ellery and former Doctor Who Magazine editor and author Gary Russell. Several other established Doctor Who authors have been approached to write further stories, including Marc Platt, Andy Lane and Mark Gatiss.
