Michael Craze (Ben Jackson)
Michael Craze, who played First and Second Doctor companion Ben Jackson, passed away on 7th December 1998.

Born on 29 December 1942 Michael Craze entered the world of entertainment as a boy soprano playing in Boy Scout gang shows and at the age of 12 in West End musicals including The King and I.

Television appearances then followed including Armchair Theatre, and Target Luna. He was then asked to audition for a part in Doctor Who which he was already a keen viewer of. On passing the audition he was surprised to learn that his character was to be a regular companion along with Polly, played by Anneke Wills

His first story was "The War Machines" in 1966 and after the change of The Doctor from William Hartnell to Patrick Troughton he stayed until the final episode of "The Faceless Ones" in 1967.

After leaving Doctor Who he continued to make the occasional films and television appearances including Crossroads and the 1994 Kenneth Branagh's film Frankenstein.

Michael Craze's only surviving complete story that is still held in the BBC archives is the story that he first appeared in - "The War Machines".
