Missing Episode of The Crusade Found in New Zealand
The Crusade
The Crusade
"The Lion", Episode 1 of the season 2 William Hartnell story "The Crusade", has been returned to the BBC archives. First transmitted in 1965 this episode was one of the 110 missing episodes leaving just a further 109 to be discovered.

Spotted in a New Zealand collectors fair in June 1998. The purchaser was unaware of the value of his find until it came to the attention of a member of the New Zealand Doctor Who Fan Club. The exact details of how this episode came to be in a New Zealand market are unknown.

Written by David Whitaker this 4 part story features Julian Glover as King Richard the Lionheart and Jean Marsh as Princess Joanna, King Richard's sister. Along with William Hartnell as the First Doctor this story includes companions Barbara, (played by Jacqueline Hill), Ian (played by William Russell) and Vicki (played by Maureen O'Brien).

The discovery of this episode now means that half of this story is now held by the BBC. Episode 3 "The Wheel of Fortune" was never destroyed and has already been released on video as part of "The Hartnell Years" (BBCV 4608) in 1991.

This is the first find since 1991 when the classic "The Tomb of the Cybermen" was discovered in Hong Kong. Hopefully this recently found episode will soon be released on video for all to enjoy and maybe other missing episodes may be found in a similar way.
