During the Sixties
and early Seventies off-monitor photographs (telesnap photographs) were taken
by a specialist freelance photographer named John Cura who, in the days before
the domestic video recorder, used to offer them to members of the cast and crew
as a permanent record of their work. Doctor Who was however not unique as John
Cura took photo's from hundreds of different TV series, many of which have
since been junked or lost! The telesnap
photographs have become a vital part of Doctor Who's documentation and have
become the only visual record of some of the many stories that are no longer
known to exist as film prints. Many telesnaps were retrieved from the BBC's own
Written Records Archive, who retain copies representing almost every episode
from "The
Gunfighters" to "The
Mind Robber". However, BBC records indicate that
Cura was taking photo's from Doctor Who as early as 1964, and so the hunt for
these early photo's is almost as eagerly pursued as the hunt for the missing
episodes themselves! Photo's from several stories have been printed in various
publications, (including Doctor Who Magazine and DWB/Dreamwatch). Resourceful
fans have also been able to synchronise the surviving audio soundtracks of the
missing episodes with the telesnaps so as to create slideshow-like
reconstructions of some of the missing stories and episodes. Some of these
reconstructions also contain behind the scenes footage and privately owned
material.

This project was
carried out by several fans in America, Canada, Australia and Great Britain who
created reconstructions of the missing stories using scripts, recorded
soundtracks, existing footage and photographs of both television broadcasts and
off-air footage. There are many "missing" reconstructed stories that now exist
on video and they were available free-of-charge to fans for the cost of tape
and postage only. The tapes were not produced for any sort of monetary
compensation. |
Missing stories that have been
reconstructed include:

|
|
The Power of the Daleks |
|
|
The Web of Fear |

The Doctor Who reconstructions
are fan-produced endeavours completed without the consent of BBC Worldwide,
BBC Television, or any holders
of the Doctor Who licence. |
