The Nightmare Continues
in: |
Following
on from the success of the first four-part mini-series
"Dalek
Empire", featuring the dreaded Daleks in
their own Doctor-less CDs, Big Finish Productions announced
that 2003 will see the release of a second run, referred
to with typically Skarosian logic as "Dalek Empire
II".
Once
again Big Finish Production's Dalek maestro Nicholas Briggs
has written and directed the adventures. Says Briggs:
|
"After the shattering
climax to the first series, a whole new threat to
the galaxy arises! Will the Dalek Empire fill, or
will it transform into something even more terrifying?
In short, there's a lot more story to tell
" |
|
"Dalek Empire II: Dalek War" is the
continuation of the epic saga of the Dalek's attempts
to conquer the entire Universe that began with the first
"Dalek Empire" audio mini-series.
The new four part series was released
in the beginning of 2003 on single CD's with the exception
of the final chapter which was a special double-CD with
interviews and music on a second CD.
Writer/director Nicholas Briggs assembled
a host of returning actors and recorded the four-part
series over five sessions. Joining Gareth Thomas, Teresa
Gallagher, Ian Brooker and Mark McDonnell from Dalek
Empire were Hannah Smith as the Alternative Dalek Mentor,
Helen Goldwyn as Godwin and Dannie Carr as Morli.

This Time it's War!
|
Unlike the previous series, when each chapter was recorded
one at a time, this season's scripts were written together
and then all four CDs' worth of material taped in two
weeks across five recording sessions beginning on Sunday
27th October.
Writer/director Nick Briggs explains the reason for
the slightly eccentric pattern of recording:
|
"In
the first series, we recorded one episode at
a time, simply because I was writing one
episode
at a time. For Dalek War, I've written the whole
script before commencing recording, so I
can split
the studio sessions into character blocks rather
than episode blocks, which makes for more
efficient
use of the actors' time.' But there is another
reason for the slightly sporadic recordings.
'Cast availability
is a major factor,' explains Nick. 'There are
a number or returning characters from Dalek Empire,
but the actors playing them are all very busy
at the moment, so it's been quite a monumental
scheduling struggle to find days when they're
all available. One of the dates clashes with a
Doctor Who, but since The Moat Studios have two
recording studios, we'll be using both at the
same time. They really will be overrun by Big
Finish, with two casts milling around the corridors.
It's going to be hectic, but fun.
Asked which characters
from Dalek Empire are returning, Nick is reluctant
to spill the beans. 'Something that unexpectedly
came out of the first series was that whole cliffhanger
thing... Everyone had to wait until the next CD
to find out what happened next - and everyone
seemed to like that. So I won't spoil the surprises.
But there are, hopefully, plenty of shocks in
store!
Some listeners were
a little unhappy with Dalek Empire ending on a
cliffhanger. Will the new series have a similarly
controversial ending? 'Whether it's going to be
controversial or not, I don't know. But it is
very definite. |

Dalek Empire II: Dalek War is a four
part mini-series that continues the story begun in Dalek
Empire and features the Daleks from the world of BBC TV's
Doctor Who.
Dalek War sees Alby, Kalendorf and
co in league with inter-dimensional Alternative Daleks
(who made their surprise debut at the end of Dalek Empire)
in their joint fight against the evil Daleks from our
galaxy. Leading the Alternative Daleks is the mysterious
Mentor. And Gareth Thomas is back as Kalendorf (Knight
of Velyshaa and sworn enemy of the Daleks).
A special 30-minute preview of the
first story was featured on the free CD available with
the January's 2003 issue of Doctor Who Magazine.
