Notes

This story is the introduction of Freema Agyeman as companion Martha Jones.

Freema Agyeman's appearance at the end of Season Twenty Eight (New Series 2), in "Army of Ghosts/Doomsday", is explained as being her cousin Adeola.

This story also introduces the viewer to Martha's family who will be recurring characters throughout Season Twenty Nine (New Series 3). This includes Martha's mother Francine (played by Adjoa Andoh - who appeared in last season's "New Earth"), her sister Tish (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), brother Leo (Reggie Yates) and father Clive (Trevor Laird - who appeared in the 1986 Sixth Doctor story "Mindwarp" - part of The Trial of a Time Lord season).

Guest star Anne Reid (who plays plays blood-sucking Plasmavore Florence Finnegan) played the part of the ill-fated Nurse Crane in the 1989 Seventh Doctor story "The Curse of Fenric" who had the blood sucked out of her!

Interestingly this story has no lead-in before the introductory titles.

Director Charles Palmer is the son of distinguished actor Geoffrey Palmer, who appeared in the Third Doctor stories "Doctor Who and the Silurians" and "The Mutants" and also in "Voyage of the Damned".

The Doctor first used the pseudonym John Smith in "The Wheel in Space" and has adopted it occasionally ever since. However, the name was first heard in the show in the first ever story, "An Unearthly Child" - popular beat combo John Smith and the Common Men could be heard playing on Susan's radio.

The Season Twenty Nine (New Series 3) story arc "Vote Saxon" is mentioned as well as seen on bills posted along the walls at the end.

This is not the first time The Doctor has been to the moon. The Second Doctor found himself there in the 1967 story "The Moonbase".

The Judoon aren't the first race of Doctor Who monsters to be inspired by rhinos. The first were the evil Kraals, designed by John Friedlander for the 1975 story "The Android Invasion"

Eight Judoon costumes were made for this story. Only one had an animatronic head underneath its helmet. It took three puppeteers needed to make the Judoon Captain talk, plus Nicholas Briggs to do the actual voice. Nicholas Briggs has provided voices for the Daleks and the Cybermen in both the television show and also in the Big Finish Productions audio range.

The end of this story contains a trailer for the next story "The Shakespeare Code".

Following on immediately after this story, on BBC3, was the first chapter of the third series of Doctor Who Confidential, "Meet Martha Jones" presented by Anthony Head. Unlike the previous two seasons the length of Doctor Who Confidential, from this chapter onwards, has been extended to 45 minutes.

Quote of the Story

'What, people call you 'The Doctor'? Well, I'm not. As far as I'm concerned you've got to earn that title.'
