Notes

The only Doctor Who tale to completely lack The Doctor and any of his companions. William Hartnell does appear in the credits, as The Doctor, but does not appear in this story.

This one part story is sometimes referred to as "Dalek Cutaway" and was filmed as a one-off 'preview' of the forthcoming 12-part Daleks story "The Daleks' Master Plan".

The production code 'T/A' was never used on any official documentation but is generally used for reference.

The story was produced as part of the previous story's block, in tandem with "Galaxy 4" (even sharing the same director, Derek Martinus) and is the final story produced by Verity Lambert, the show's first producer.

This story came about because an earlier story "Planet of Giants" had been cut from four episodes to three during post production so leaving an additional episode that had already been allocated to the show.

Terry Nation wrote this episode partially as an attempt to create a story about the Daleks that did not involve The Doctor or his companions, such that he could eventually develop and sell the idea of a Dalek series, divorced from the Doctor Who universe.

In 2019 students at the University of Central Lancashire recreated this single episode story with the involvement of Peter Purves, Edward de Souza and Nicholas Briggs. This story premiered on the Doctor Who YouTube channel at 5:45pm BST on the 9th October 2019, exactly 54 years after it first aired.

First and Last

The Firsts:

 The first single episode story.

The first (and only) story to completely lack The Doctor and any of his companions.

The Lasts (Subject to Future Stories):

Verity Lambert's last involvement in the show as Producer.

The Plot

The Daleks Reveal Their Master Plan
The Daleks Reveal Their Master Plan

Marc Cory is an agent of the Space Security Service and he has been dispatched on a secret mission to the planet Kembel to investigate a recent sighting of a Dalek spaceship that has been spotted in this part of the solar system. Marc Cory's suspicion that the Daleks have been gaining control of many planets and have established a base on Kembel proves well-founded.

While he and Gordon Lowery try to repair their spaceship another crewmember, Jeff Garvey, has fallen victim to the poisonous thorns of a Varga plant – deadly flora that is indigenous to the Daleks' home world, Skaro. This is further evidence that the Daleks could be on Kembel.

On realising Jeff Garvey has become infected, by a Varga thorn, Marc Cory has no choice but to shoot him. Jeff Garvey is in a lot of pain and then lies still. Marc Cory pulls a long Varga thorn out from behind Jeff Garvey’s ear. He then warns Gordon Lowery that if he stung himself on it he would have to kill him too.

As Marc Cory and Gordon Lowery go into the spaceship, leaving Jeff Garvey's body, they are unaware that Jeff Garvey’s hand begins to twitch and hair and thorns start to grow all over his body. He is becoming a Varga plant.

Elsewhere in the Kembel jungle, the Daleks are discussing how to exterminate the humans. Marc Cory and Gordon Lowery are more concerned with the Varga plants than the Daleks. As a Dalek spaceship flies above them they realise the Daleks must be planning something big.

Leaving Gordon Lowery to set up a rescue beacon Marc Cory heads for the Dalek’s city. On reaching it Marc Cory overhears the Dalek Supreme being updated on the latest developments. Representatives from the seven galaxies have gathered in a conference room. They are worried about the humans, they believe they are hostile, but the Daleks assure them that the humans will be dealt with. The representatives then all approve the Dalek plans to invade Earth's galaxy and to conquer Earth. They also pledge an alliance to the Dalek cause.

Shortly after returning to his spaceship Marc Cory detects something moving in the jungle. As Marc Cory and Gordon Lowery hide behind some bushes four Daleks glide into the landing area. They then destroy the human’s spaceship.

With the destruction of their spaceship Marc Cory and Gordon Lowery head deeper into the jungle. But Gordon Lowery discovers a Varga thorn deeply embedded in his hand. He pulls it out and frantically attempts to suck out the poison.

But it is not long before Gordon Lowery is in a lot of pain and Varga spines start growing all over his body. He tries to cover them up but Marc Cory, on realising Gordon Lowery has become infected by a Varga plant, has no choice but to shoot his colleague.

Marc Cory also realises that for him, there is no escape and so he records a warning message and prepares to send it into orbit with a rocket launcher. But before he can do so he is discovered by the Daleks who exterminate him.

But the Daleks fail to destroy the beacon and the message, so enabling the information that Marc Cory has gathered to be discovered by the next visitors to the planet.

Quote of the Story

'I'll tell you this: there's something very big going on here, and if the Daleks are involved, you can bet your life our whole galaxy is in danger.'
