Synopsis

The TARDIS has jumped a time track, landing on the planet Xeros where The Doctor and his companions discover the unsettling sight of their own future selves - displayed as exhibits in the Morok museum. The exhibits testify to the galactic conquests of the Morok invaders who now rule the planet.

When time shifts back to normal, The Doctor and his companions embark on a campaign to avert their fate, with Vicki helping the native Xerons to obtain arms with which to launch a revolution against the Moroks.

But will this be enough to secure the time travellers' existence?

Notes

This story was produced as a low-budget story to accommodate larger budgets for the other stories during Season Two.

This story is one of the few First Doctor stories that uses the overall title story to name one of the episodes, others include: "The Keys of Marinus", "Planet of Giants" and "The Web Planet".

The first episode begins with a brief reprise of the final scenes in the previous story, "The Crusade". This is currently the only surviving film footage of episode 4 of "The Crusade".

The incidental music used for this story came from stock recordings rather than being specially composed.

William Hartnell did not appear in the third episode, "The Search", except in the previous episode's reprise as he was on holiday during the recording of this episode.

Author Glyn Jones was also an actor and he appeared in the Fourth Doctor story "The Sontaran Experiment".

Peter Craze, who plays Dako, is the younger brother of Michael Craze, who played companion Ben Jackson (during the First Doctor and the Second Doctor eras) from 1966 to 1967.

Jeremy Bulloch is famous for for his role as bounty hunter Boba Fett in two of the Star Wars films - "The Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi". He would later return to Doctor Who in the 1974 Third Doctor story "The Time Warrior".

Richard Shaw, who played the part of Governor Lobos, later appeared as Cross in the 1973 Third Doctor story "Frontier in Space".

This story contains an amusing scene in which The Doctor hides inside a Dalek casing - an exhibit in the Moroks' museum.

Ian is seen to use Barbara's cardigan (and the Minotaur legend) in an attempt to find a way out of the museum.

During the sequence in which Lobos tries to interrogate The Doctor using a machine that displays his prisoner's thoughts on a screen, The Doctor feeds the device a series of amusing false images, including a photograph of himself wearing a Victorian bathing costume.

At the end of this story The Doctor finds (and is given) the a Time Space Visualiser that is used in the next story, "The Chase".

First and Last

The Firsts:

The first time that The Doctor and his companions see a possible future which they have to prevent from occuring.

The first Doctor Who story to be written by Glyn Jones.
