Freema Agyeman to Replace Billie Piper

Freema Agyeman is now officially a Doctor Who companion and will appear in Season 3 in 2007.

Freema Agyeman will play Martha Jones in the next run of the drama which is due to start filming in Cardiff in summer 2006.

She has already appeared in Doctor Who playing the part of Adeola, a minor character who suffered at the hands of the Cybermen.

The current series of Doctor Who finishes on BBC One on Saturday 8th July and sees Billie Piper leaving the show.

It was revealed last month that Billie Piper was leaving the programme and this was confirmed at the begining of "Army of Ghosts/Doomsday" where this two part story opened with a voice-over from the character saying: "This is the story of how I died".

It is understood that although she has now officially joined the cast, producers say Agyeman will not be featured in this year's Christmas special.

"We've got another surprise in store for that," said Executive Producer Russell T. Davies.
